Because Brains

WELCOME!

Hello lovely person. I’m Liesl and I’m so glad you’re here.

I love sharing info and ideas that help you help children, but not just any ideas. I’m fiercely passionate about sharing information grounded in brain science, research, and real-world experience. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, let me know. Point me in your direction, and we’ll work together to find what you need.

MY HEART

I believe when children and those who guide them feel seen, understood, and appropriately supported, they can grow into their potential.

THE MISSION

Bridge brain science and real-world practice, making skills and insights accessible so anyone working with children can feel confident and be successful in nurturing learning and development.

THE VISION

A world where lifelong love of learning thrives, relationships are safe spaces, and people learn together, openly growing as their full selves.

MY STORY

I have been a teacher to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, highschoolers, adults of all ages, and most of all to myself. My education career spans over 25 years.

I began working in early childhood in the late 1990s and stayed exclusively in that field until 2022, starting as a teacher in preschool and infant/toddler classrooms and later transitioning into a role supporting and coaching early childhood professionals. From 2022 to today, my day job has shifted to teaching child and family development to high school students, while continuing to support early childhood in other ways.

Across my career, I’ve nourished my own learning through many paths, including earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in child and family development, and more recently, a Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning.

My résumé looks polished and professional, but living it was messy. It felt like a fantastical cross-country road trip filled with car sickness, hills and valleys, icy curves, worn brakes, and flat tires… alongside awe-inspiring canyon sunrises, soaring eagles, babbling brooks, and ocean sunsets.

It’s been a journey. I have no regrets, and I’m no where near ready to put it in park. My tank is full, and I’m road-ready.

When I look across the ages I’ve been blessed to work with, something powerful stands out. The early childhood years are a critical period of brain development. The teenage years bring massive remodeling and growth of the adolescent brain. And in adulthood, our brains continue growing in different ways.

The better we understand how brains develop and function at each stage of life, the better we can support success in the present, and lay the groundwork for the stages still to come.

All fellow brain lovers are welcome. And if that’s not you, no worries. If you’re here because you care about children, learning, and relationships, you’re in the right place. I’m so glad you stopped by.
